Boundary Bell 2025
This year's Boundary Bell was held at Bonnyton Golf Club on Sunday 31st August.
Cathkin Braes, winners of the Brand Putter League were representing the South Side, and Glasgow Golf Club, the winners of the Donald Cameron League representing the North side.
It was a very changeable day weather wise, with strong gusts of wind particularly in the afternoon, making condidtions tricky for the players. The match got underway with the first of 9 x 2 ball games between Jonathan King of Glasgow and Gordon Sangster of Cathkin Braes resulting in a 1up win for Gordon. Neil MacRae then had a 2&1 win in his game, and Greg Telfer and Rick Gray halved the third game. Glasgow then stepped up the pace with three wins in a row from Gary Murphy over Harry Hutchison, Dan Forbes over David McLaren and in game six Angus Watson's win over Shaun Philbin. In game seven, Clark Nelson and Ross McLeish halved their game and in the final game Stevie Coyle of Cathkin had a 1up victory over Steven Rettie. The reserve match resulted in a win for Colin Peddie over Sam Elliot.
The final result was a 5-3 victory for Glasgow, thus regaining the trophy they lost last year at Bishopbriggs. Congratulations to Angus Cameron and his team and their enviable record of 4 wins in this event. They can now look forward to competing in the Inter Cities Cup to be held this year at Lenzie Golf Club. Commiserations to Cathkin Braes who last won this trophy in 2018, and they will be hoping to be back next year to try again.
Wee Boundary Bell 2025
In the Junior BB, the teams are also from Cathkin Braes and Glasgow. Cathkin were winners of this year's Fleming Watson League and Glasgow were the winners of the JJ McCarry League.
The Junior BB matches started at 12.20 with a halved game between Cameron Burns of Glasgow and Ben Sproule of Cathkin. In the second game Gregor Campbell had a 1up win over Max Welsh, and Glasgow then took the third game with a Seamus McCuish win over Lennon McFadyen. Cathkin then powered back with Charlie Richardson and Coery Payne both picking up points with wins over Archie MacMillan and Harris McGregor respectively.
This left the overall match tied and the par 3 9th hole was selected for the sudden death playoff. This sudden death playoff has already happened 3 times in the short history of the Wee Bell, and a large number of spectators settled behind the green to watch the action. Cameron Burns was first to play for Glasgow, and he hit a super shot to around 20 feet on the left side of the flag. Max Welsh's tee shot for Cathkin was just slightly too long and settled in the rough behind the green. It's a diffucult chip back onto the green from here and Max didn't quite get the control he would have wanted. Meanwhile, Cameron was able to comfortably 2 putt for the win, and thus retain the WBB for Glasgow.
All in all, a fantastic match from the Juniors and congratulations to Glasgow who now have 3 wins in this event. Commiserations to Cathkin, who played well in the event and came so close.
Many thanks to our hosts at Bonnyton Golf Club for hosting the event. The golf course was in great condition, particularly the greens, and feedback from the players was very favourable. Thanks also to the catering staff and to Captain Kevin for making us very welcome.
Inter Cities Cup 2025
This year the Inter Cities Cup Final was scheduled as normal for the first Sunday in October to be played in Glasgow at Lenzie Golf Club. The 2 clubs participating were Glasgow Golf Club representing Glasgow and Duddingston Golf Club representing Edinburgh. Unfortunately there was very heavy rain all week prior to the match, with the weather forecast for match day Sunday not favourable. After consultation, the match was cancelled and rescheduled for the following Sunday as per the standing arrangement.
During the week leading up to the re-scheduled final the DCL were informed that Duddingston GC were unable to provide a team for Sunday's match. Under ICC Rule 13, any clubs unable to fulfill the fixture will forfeit the match and the Inter Cities Cup will be awarded to the other participating club. Glasgow GC are therefore awarded the Inter Cities Cup for 2025.
